IPv6 stack on Ubuntu/Debian Linux systems

In this article we will explain how to enable or disable IPv6 stack on Ubuntu/Debian systems.

IPv6 stack state configuration

Following parameters are used to control the IPv6 stack:

net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.[network_interface].disable_ipv6

Value of these parameters can be either **‘0’** (enabled) or **‘1’** (disabled).

Edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file and add the parameters at the end of the file:

New settings will go into effect after the restart or you can issue a command:

sysctl -p

Using a command sysctl we can disable the stack immediately, but these changes to not stay in the system after a reboot:

sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=0
sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=0

A simple script to run under root:

ip address show
echo "net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
echo "net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
sysctl -p
ip address show
exit
exit
